One of the most pertinent facts in "The Danger Zone" in the June issue of W was the remark by Dr. Jack Friedland: "If a doctor tells you they don't have complications [with breast-augmentation surgery,] they're either not operating or they're lying." Complications from breast surgery are inherent to the operation. You are placing a sterile foreign material into a soft tissue pocket underneath the breast or muscle. Plastic surgery is as much an art as it is a science.

As a board-certified plastic surgeon, I review all the possible complications of the surgery outlined by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. I also have my patients review the breast-implant manufacturer's consent. None of this information has ever deterred one of my patients from having the procedure.

A significant number of my operations are revisions of other surgeries. Not that the original surgeon did a bad job. The aesthetic results were just not pleasing to the patient.

There are a great deal of variables in breast surgery. Some of these, like size and shape, are controllable. Others, like the effects of wound healing, are uncontrollable. Sometimes when dealing with a surgical revision it takes a different set of eyes and hands and outlook to please the patient.
