Visitors' Stories -- Kate's Recovery Story

My BA from Dr. DeWire!!! Posted By: Kate
Date: Tuesday, 23 March 1999, at 10:26 a.m.

3/10: 8 hr. train to Woodbridge, Virginia: Anne's home. Tired. Still time to chicken out, I'm thinking.

3/11: 1 1/2 hr. drive to Dr. DeWire's for consult. We spent 2 hrs. talking. He will make the decision on what size implant I will have. Also getting a full lift. Anne- and I drove back.

3/12: Pre-op testing. The needle hurt! Approx. 3:30 going to surgery. Spoke with Dr. D and the anesthesiologist. I was DEATHLY afraid of anesthesia. I remember giving Dr. D my husband's. e-mail address so he could report while I was recovering. Lights were out after that!

Next thing, Dr. D tried to speak with me, but I just wanted to sleep. Anne- was next speaking to me and getting me up. I remember sipping ginger ale, then going out to her car. I did spit up a little ginger ale then, but not much.

We arrived at the nearby Hyatt and she helped me undress and get to bed. I put a pillow under each arm to relieve pressure on my underarm stitches. I slept till approx. 6:30 when she woke me for my meds. Slept till awoken to make the 10:00 a.m. appt. with Dr. D.

3/13: Arrived at Dr. D's. He removed the bandage and all. I looked huge, I thought. But very nice for all the cutting he had just done. He showed me how to massage. I was expecting to swear; to my surprise, it did not hurt me at all. Actually felt good. Seemed to relieve some of the pressure. I haven't been in any pain. No more Percocet, only Advil, 800mgs every 6 hrs. Just a heaviness in my chest. Instructed to return Mon. with an underwire bra to set my pocket. (Although, this is not his usual instruction). We drove back to Anne's home. I went to bed, woke at 5 to eat, and went right back to bed. I awoke on and off that whole day only for meds and massaging, possible bathroom run. Still no pain; just the pressure when arising to get out of bed. Almost 16 hrs. in bed. I think that helped me.

3/14: Sunday. Woke, dressed to go out to breakfast and mall for my underwire. Rested all day after that.

3/15: Monday, Anne woke me. Said it was stormy, probably would not get to my appt. with Dr. D.! Looked outside, light flurries. Nothing like a Boston storm!! Ended up driving myself the 1 1/2 hr. ride to his office. No problem. He removed the clear tape from my breasts and cleaned them. Redressed them with steri strips. Instructed to wear the underwire during the day, surgical bra at night, for two weeks. Keep massaging. I am feeling really good. No pain.

3/16: I make the 7:25 a.m. train to Boston, arrive at 5:30, and take the local commuter rail to Braintree, 20 minutes, and picked up by my husband. Still taking my Advil every 6 hrs. Showed Bob my results; he is speechless at how good I look only 5 days post-op.

3/19: Bob removed my underarm tape and the stitches. Painless, although I did act scared.

3/20: Bob removed my steri-stips. Just a pulling. But I was a baby (LOL). (I was so brave when Dr. D. removed what I considered packaging tape a few days earlier).

3/21: Returned to work; no one noticed. Just can't take this underwire. 5 more days to wear it then it gets ditched!!! Everyday has gotten better with the pressure when arising out of bed. I don't have many bruises. I massage every 3-4 hrs still. No more Advil. I look great for 12 days post-op. The nipple area is relaxing. I no longer think I am huge. Actually love this size and hope I stay as-is. But if I do lose some that will be okay too. My current bra is a 36C from a sagging 32b. I look great, feel great.

Dr. DeWire did a beautiful job. I would make the trip to him all over again. The only thing I would do different is drive myself to VA or fly. Today I am taking my first after pictures. Bob and I love what Dr. DeWire has done. You will, too. Kate and Bob.
