Introduction

Breast Cancer and Reconstruction Information:

Some of the wonderful and very brave women who visit the site put together information, links and even personal stories to help us all to understand the importance of breast health, self-examination and early detection.  We owe special thanks to Kari who put together most of the information in this section.  Even if you read nothing else here on the site, please take the time to review the information in this section and in the sites to which it links.  It could save your life!

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women of all ages, and is the leading cause of death for women ages 35 to 54. Each year almost 200,000 women in the U.S. are diagnosed with breast cancer - that's one every three minutes. And nearly 45,000 will die from the disease this year.

Breast cancer most frequently strikes women over age 45. Risk factors for breast cancer include family history and having a first child after age 30 (or never having children). But 80% of women who are diagnosed have no known risk factors.

Every woman, regardless of family history, age, or lifestyle, is a potential victim of this disease. Almost 12% of all women in the U.S. - one in eight -- will develop it during their life. However, if it is caught early, breast cancer is highly curable. Our best defense against this disease is awareness of early detection methods.
