Expandable Implants - Spectrum
The spectrum adjustable saline implants come in smooth and textured wall types. They have the full spectrum of sizes and the manufacturer suggests to fill anywhere from 25cc to 140cc depending on the initial size of the implant itself. They come with a small remote port that is placed laterally over the rib cage. The plastic surgeon can fill the implant over weeks to months to let the patient decide exactly on the size. The advantages are obvious in that the patient can decide how large she wants to be within the manufacturers recommendations and can correct any minor asymmetries.
The disadvantages are that it requires a second surgery done under local in the office, the pain of the injections and most literature shows a higher infection rate with a remote port. Also they cost a little more. If the patient is aware of the added risk they can be very helpful in answering the most asked question "How big do you want to be?"
