Where do all the old posts go? Why do I get a message saying that the message I want read no longer exists?
Can I post a follow-up to an archived message?

1. Where did all the old posts go? Why do I get a "No Message! Sorry, but the message you just tried to load doesn't exist!"?
The old posts are still here. When a message ages off the discussion board, it moves to a holding area. Early each morning, the messages are moved from the holding area into the first archive. There are four archives - which hold about 10 days worth of posts. Posts in the Support Forum are not archived.
2. Can I post a follow-up to an old message?
Not exactly...
If you want to post a message in the new board that references the old board, just tell people that it's a follow-up to an "archive" message. For example, if you were going to post a reply to an archived message from Jan 7, you could use the following as your Subject line: "Re: Archive msg from 1/7 - Finding a PS" and then type your message in the Message box.
3. Can I change the way that messages display?
You bet!
From the INDEX PAGE of the Forum, click Set Preferences. This brings up the Preferences screen.
There are two drop downs on that screen - one for Time and one for Display Style, The time one doesn't really matter, since the Forum gets more than 500 messages per day most days - and that's all it holds.
The second drop down controls the display style:
- "Chronological" displays show messages simply in the order in which they were posted. "Threaded" displays show messages in indented lists, with responses directly beneath their parent messages. In either style, a normal list puts the newest messages at the bottom, while a reversed list, obviously, does the reverse.
- The "reversed threaded" display, though somewhat awkward, is the "default" index style of many Web-based bulletin boards, including Matt Wright's "WWWBoard" script, and is the style with which many users are most familiar. **THIS IS THE DEFAULT STYLE FOR OUR FORUM**
- The "mixed threaded" display is a bit of a half-breed; it arranges primary messages with the newest at the top, thus tending to keep newer messages toward the top of the page, but arranges responses with the newest at the bottom, thus preserving a more "intuitive" threading structure.
- "Compressed" displays show on the main index page only the first message of each thread; responses are available only by going to the primary message's page. This keeps the index page a bit smaller, but also, of course, makes the responses a bit more difficult to access.
- Finally, "guestbook-style" displays show the full text of messages on the main index page in a strict chronological manner; "threaded guestbook-style" displays show an index page very similar to that of the "compressed" displays, but show the full text of all messages in a thread on a single page.)
Select the display style you want to use. Then, scroll down a little until you see the "View Message Index" button.
Click it. You'll be taken back to the index page, which will now display in the fashion you've chosen.
** The display style feature relies on the use of a browser cookie, If your browser doesn't display cookies, you'll always get the default style display of Threaded - reversed. **
